Search highlights

Epiq Discovery provides two types of highlights, default highlights and persistent highlights. The following sections explain the differences between these highlights.

Default highlights

Default highlights appear when you search for documents by typing a term or phrase in the box then open a resulting document. When you open a resulting document, in the  pane, the term appears as a search, and in the document, the term appears highlighted. Additionally, if you search for terms within a document while displaying it in Native or Image mode, that term also appears in the Default highlight color. To modify the color of the Default highlight, refer to  Modify review settings and highlights for more information.

  • For a single word search, you can also supply an asterisk at the beginning or end of a word, but other types of wildcard usage are not supported in highlights. The system highlights only the supplied term. For example, when you supply cond*, the system highlights only "cond".

  • Metadata search using field names is not supported in highlights. If the search term contains a combination of metadata and text, the system highlights only the text portion.

  • When the search term contains words and the logical operators (and, or, not, etc.), the system ignores the operators and highlights the individual words.

  • If the search term contains special characters, the system ignores special characters and highlights only the words. For example, when you supply (very limited), the system ignores the parentheses and highlights "very" and "limited" separately.

  • When you do a fuzzy search, the system ignores the fuzzy search and highlights the supplied term only. For example, when you supply ratin~1, the system ignores the fuzzy search characters (~1) and highlights the term "ratin".

Persistent highlights

If you set persistent highlights (Responsive Color, Privilege Color, and Global) in , the supplied terms appear highlighted in the associated color when they occur in any document. In the Native or Image Viewer, persistent highlights appear when you click Content Search . To modify the colors of persistent highlights, refer to  Modify review settings and highlights for more information.
